| Acupuncture Treatment of IVF and Fertility
Acupuncture in support of IVF, as well as for couples having difficulty conceiving, has received a considerable amount of positive press and research in the last few years. My practice receives a number of enquiries every month for fertility treatment, and I have treated many individuals with fertility issues.I do not believe that acupuncture is the 'key' to successful conception and pregnancy although some research suggests it may help tip the balance for certain individuals. Other factors will obviously play a part, such as healthy eating and lifestyle in both partners, not over-exercising, healthy sleep patterns, good general state of fitness, age, and the optimum levels of western medication used for those undergoing IVF. Stress and anxiety may influence outcomes and I feel that acupuncture has a great deal to offer here. It may be the case that if the mind and body are relaxed, that the body is more receptive to conception. The rest is in the 'lap of the gods', and you should not enter into acupuncture treatment with the view that the treatment will help guarantee a positive outcome in any way. Other benefits may arise from treatment during an IVF cycle, in that side effects from medications may be reduced. Side effects such as hot flushes, headaches, insomnia, emotional swings, bloating and fatigue may all be moderated through treatment. Please refer to the research page of my website for links to articles on this subject.
I am a member of the Acupuncture Fertility Network, which is a group of acupuncturists that share information, ideas and suggestions, and members undergo some further training in this area. Like the majority of other members of the British Acupuncture Council, I have undergone fertility related training as part of my four-year college training. I have also attended further short courses relating to IVF as well as gynaecology and issues around fertility.I have one daughter, and I am very familiar with the emotions, hopes and rewards involved in starting and bringing up a family. I have found the treatment of infertility a very rewarding part of my practice.
